Procrastination breakthrough for high achievers
A simple 3-step framework to get past procrastination and finally fulfil your authentic potential.
Bring to mind that thing that you’ve been wanting to do for a while now. But you’ve been putting it off for weeks. Or months. Maybe even years.
You know the one.
Yes, that.
It’s the thing that you keep telling yourself that you’ll get to one day. When there’s time. When things settle down a bit. When you have the space to think about it properly…
When you find yourself procrastinating or avoiding a specific task (even though it’s something that you really want to do), it’s easy to feel frustrated with yourself. Even a bit embarrassed, if you’re being honest. Maybe you have noticed a tendency to justify your procrastination, rationalise your actions (or lack of action) – or maybe you attempt to hide it (even from yourself).
For those of us who identify as high achievers, high performers and hard workers, it’s easy to assume that we should be able to figure this out. Considering everything that we have already achieved, the many things we’ve been able to tick off the list, it doesn’t seem to make logical sense that we can’t just simply get this one thing (that we WANT to do) done.
What procrastination is NOT
Procrastinating or avoiding doing a specific task does not mean that:
you are lazy,
you are not good enough,
there’s something wrong with you,
or that you don’t deserve to have what you want.
It doesn’t mean that you don’t want it enough or that you’re ‘getting in your own way’.
The secret that no one tells you about procrastination is that it’s not the task or the action itself that you’re avoiding.
More than likely the resistance coming up is a sign that there’s a part of you that feels uncomfortable, uncertain, or unsafe.
The simple steps to break through procrastination
Here’s the simple framework that I follow (for myself and for my clients) to move past procrastination:
- Discover what’s really getting in the way (it may not be exactly what you think it is).
- Decide that you’re ready to become the person who trusts that you can break through old patterns and start creating a life that you genuinely love. The kind of life where you can be yourself and make the kind of difference that you’ve always dreamed of having.
- Develop a plan to resolve the resistance and start doing what’s most important to you.
Some practical support for you
While the above framework is simple, it’s not necessarily easy! Here are a few practical techniques that you can use to support the process.
Get curious: When you think about doing the task you’ve been putting off, notice the thoughts that are coming up. Pay attention to the sensations that you feel in your body. Become aware of the emotions that arise.
Take (even) smaller steps: break the task down into smaller and smaller action steps. It might feel a bit silly to start with, but you’ll know you’ve broken it down far enough when you have no (or very little) resistance to doing at least the first few steps.
Try sequencing: experiment with doing the task that you’ve been avoiding either directly before or after another task that you really love doing or that leaves you feeling energised.
